Xiao Zhang, owner of the Mandarin Wok, was shot in the head while inside the restaurant late Wednesday night. He remains stable at Chapel Hill Hospitals.
Detectives say the Pembertons worked at the restaurant and conspired to rob Zhang after learning he kept the restaurant deposit in his pocket.
The couple faces 17 combined charges that include attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
The Pembertons are also charged with breaking and entering, larceny and felony conspiracy for breaking into Shang's home prior to the restaurant robbery. Deputies say they stole a laptop computer and a handgun.
D'Andre and Crystal are being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center.
