The suspect was described as an African American man in his 40s with bulging eyes and had a stocky build, standing about 5 feet 11 inches tall. He was wearing a grey shirt and dark colored jeans.
The man ordered the pair to put their hands on their head and started to search them.
Police said a struggle over a gun ensued and two shots were fired.
The student was wounded in the abdomen and was treated at a local hospital. His condition is not known at this time.
Authorities said the suspect may have been injured, because he was seen limping from the scene.
