Governor rides bus, tours school

The Governor greeted parents and students at a downtown Raleigh school bus stop Tuesday morning and boarded the bus.

She toured Conn Elementary School and welcomed students through a closed-circuit television.

Perdue is a former teacher who says she spent this summer's budget negotiations trying to preserve funding for public education despite dwindling tax collections.

The final budget bill requires school districts to find $225 million in cost savings in grades 4-12.

State law requires most public schools to open no earlier than Aug. 25, with some exceptions.
