Police said the driver, 28-year-old Octavius Delrae Harrell, was driving south on Fayetteville Street when he lost control of his motorcycle and hit a pole.
He was taken to Duke Hospital where he died a short time later.
According to investigators, speed was a factor but alcohol did not appear to be involved.
