Police said 30-year-old Amanda Culross backed her mini-van over 75- year-old Jo Ann Bacon killing her.
It happened at a Wilco-Hess gas station in Coats. The town is about an hours' drive south of Durham in Harnett County.
Witnesses said the retired school teacher was walking into the store to pay for her gas when it happened.
"According to the witness' statement the vehicle went completely over the body," Coats Police Chief Eddie Jaggers said.
Authorities said Culross was drinking and had three small kids in her car at the time.
She's charged with second degree murder, three counts of child abuse and driving while impaired. The DA also added charges including three counts contributing to delinquency of a minor.
