Arts Council seeks new poet laureate

RALEIGH The Arts Council is accepting online nominations for the state's next poet laureate. Nominations will be accepted until October 9.

The purpose of the poet laureate is to promote NC writers and poetry. The person receives a $10,000 annual stipend funded by the NC Arts Council.

Duties include public activities with schools, community groups, the media and contact with writers and readers.

The most recent laureate, Kathryn Stripling Byer, developed the Writers & Books Web pages on the N.C. Arts Council's Web site, highlighting North Carolina writers of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. She also started a blog.

The selection committee meets this fall to review nominations and make recommendations to the governor, who will announce the new poet laureate next January.
