Coach Dudley Whitley III is now charged with simple assault - a misdemeanor.
Police said it happened August 17 during a practice session. Whitley was a coach for a recreation football league for the City of Rocky Mount at the time.
The coach allegedly hit the victim on the lower back with his hand as a means of discipline during the practice.
Whitley is expected in court on the charge later this week.
