Two Bragg soldiers killed in crash

FORT BRAGG They died when the MH-47 Chinook helicopter they were flying in crashed.

The soldiers were Sgt. 1st Class David E. Metzger, 32, a native of San Diego, Calif. and Staff Sgt. Keith R. Bishop, 28, a native of Smithtown, N.Y.

Metzger was a Special Forces communications sergeant, and Bishop was a Special Forces weapons sergeant.

Five other U.S. Army Special Operations Command soldiers were also killed in the crash.

They were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) headquartered at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga.

The soldiers were Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael P. Montgomery, 36, a native of Redmond, Wash, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Niall D. Lyons, 40, a native of Spokane, Wash., Staff Sgt. Shawn H. McNabb, 24, a native of Terrell, Texas, Sgt. Josue E. Hernandez-Chavez, 23, a native of Las Vegas, Nev., and Spc. Nickolas A. Mueller, 26, a native of Little Chute, Wis.

The incident is still under investigation to determine what caused the crash.

Names of those injured in the crash have not been released at this time.
