Nesbitt, Buncombe County, joined the Legislature 30 years ago and was one of the chief budget writers in the chambe. He joined the Senate in 2004.
Basnight endorsed Nesbitt two days after Rand announced he was leaving the General Assembly to become state parole commission chairman.
