The Greenville Daily Reflector reported Wednesday that an East Carolina University soccer player was accidentally shot by her boyfriend as he cleaned a handgun at his home in Clayton.

Jessica Gail Swanson, 22, was wounded in the arm and abdomen. She is recovering at WakeMed.

The incident happened Monday night and is under investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the boyfriend - 21-year-old William Hamilton - was apparently unaware the weapon was loaded. The bullet passed through his hand before hitting Swanson.

Swanson is from Smithfield. She is a senior at ECU and tied for fourth in scoring on the women's soccer team in her junior year.
