Man attempts suicide by Fayetteville police

Fayetteville police say just after 4 p.m. Thursday, officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Channing Drive in reference to an attempted suicide.When officers arrived at the home, they say a man was outside with a pistol in his hand.

The man pointed the pistol towards the ground and yelled at officers to shoot him.

Police say the man eventually obeyed commands to get to on ground and drop the gun. But when officers went to detain him, he grabbed his pistol and struggled with officers.

The man fired one shot into the ground during the struggle, before he was taken into custody.

The man has not been identified. Nobody was injured during the struggle.

Officers have not yet determined whether to criminally charge the man or do an emergency commitment.
