The riflemen assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, died in Helmand province supporting combat operations.
Sergeant Daniel M. Angus, 28, of Thonotosassa, Fla., entered the Marine Corps in September 2003 and was promoted to the rank of sergeant on May 1, 2007. Angus was on his third combat deployment, having previously served in Iraq from July 2004 to February 2005, and again from December 2005 to March 2006.
Lance Cpl. Zachary D. Smith, 19, of Hornell, N.Y., entered the Marine Corps in July 2008 and was promoted to lance corporal April 1, 2009. Smith was on his first deployment.
