Man opens fire in hospital ER

LAURINBURG, NC

They've charged Wayne "Wolf" Simmons with attempted murder.

Investigators said Simmons came to the ER and shot Domario Covington who was being treated for injuries he got in a fight at a club earlier in the evening. Simmons' daughter was apparently involved in the club fight.

Police say Simmons also tried to shoot Covington's girlfriend, but his gun malfunctioned.

Simmons allegedly got access to Covington by claiming to be his brother.

"He was allowed to go back there, and when he got with the patien, he pulled a gun out and started shooting. He shot the patient two or three times I understand," said Karen Gainey with Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Gaineysaid Simmons was detained as he tried to leave the building by Laurinburg police. He complained of chest pains and was treated at the hospital with law enforcement officers at his side.

A lockdown at the hospital was lifted around 7:30 a.m. Gainey said hospital entrances were still being monitored, but officials considered the shooting to be an isolated incident.

"We only use security procedures like that including lockdowns and police when we think we have a situation that we can't manage. And certainly for the next few days, partly for safety and security reasons and partly on a concern for the staff, we will have security around the clock for a few days," offered hospital administrator Greg Wood.

Covington was in critical condition. Simmons was transferred to a hospital in Charlotte for treatment.
