The $500 fee will be used to offset the state's 35 percent budget cut.
Last summer the state covered the $1.3 million it costs to offer the summer residential program for 800 students. This coming summer the state will accept 600 students and charge $500 tuition. On average 60-65 students are selected from Wake County each year.
Wake school board members agreed Tuesday that the district will pay half the tuition for students with parents paying the remaining $250.
The school is a six-week summer program for gifted and talented rising high school seniors.
The Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically or intellectually gifted high school students in the nation.
Students are nominated for the program and then selected from a group of nominees to undergo a lengthy application process.
If a family displays financial hardship and cannot afford the tuition, the child's current high school is expected to help cover the cost.
