The center's director recently reported the sudden death of a patient and the hospitalization of other patients in the same unit.
Those patients were taken to UNC hospitals for medical care. Out of concern for the health and safety of those patients, UNC Hospitals contacted the Chapel Hill Police Department. Investigators say they are waiting on state regulators on whether to launch a criminal probe.
For now, there's no police investigation.
Officials with the NC Department of Health and Human Services said they're not allowed to announce if and when they'll conduct an on-site investigation.
Officials say more details about the recent patient death and hospitalizations will soon be released.
