Highway 421, between Lillington and Sanford in Harnett County, was closed for hours Monday morning while authorities reloaded cattle onto a truck.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol told ABC11 Eyewitness News the cattle truck rear-ended a SUV just after midnight Monday. The SUV was making a left hand turn when the tractor-trailer hit the SUV. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The tractor-trailer was transporting a combination of 40 cows and bulls. Authorities say about 20 of the livestock were killed and the rest were loaded onto another truck at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.
