Local dog is finalist in national hero contest

SANFORD

Prozac is a 3-year-old Bichon Frise-poodle mix from Sanford. His owners say they named their dog Prozac because he makes everybody happy.

He's a finalist in the Dogs of Valor Awards, a national contest hosted by the Humane Society of the United States. The contest celebrates the human-animal bond by honoring dogs who have exhibited an extraordinary sense of courage or resolve by heroically helping a person in need.

Prozac's heroics include waking up his neighbor's when their house was on fire and barking to alert family members about their 94-year-old aunt's breathing problems.

Internet votes and a panel of celebrity judges will decide the winner.
