According to a confidential source that spoke with ABC11 last year, Madoff was beaten by a fellow inmate at the Butner federal prison north of Raleigh. Another source later claimed he actually fell out of bed and landed on his face.

ABC11 sources said that Madoff was treated at Duke University Medical Center in Durham for facial fractures, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Federal prison officials have consistently denied the attack happened. According to a report by the Associated Press, Madoff's lawyer - Ira Sorkin - said his client was not assaulted, but "had some dizzy spells and some high blood pressure."

Now, the Wall Street Journal says it has spoken with three people who also confirm the attack. The paper reports Madoff's assailant was a man serving time for a drug conviction who believed the 71-year-old owed him money.

Madoff has been at Butner for about 8 months. He's serving a 150 year sentence for a ponzi scheme that cost investors billions of dollars. He was arrested in December, 2008.
