The Chatham County Sheriff's Office said Monday that one of its officers was hurt in a crash around 6 a.m.

Deputy Jon Purvis was on his way to an "officer needs assistance" call when he lost control of his cruiser at US 1 and Pittsboro Moncure Road.

The car left the road and hit a tree.

Purvis was taken to UNC Hospitals. His injuries don't appear to be serious.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

The Sheriff's Office said several other officers responded to the original call - to help a deputy subdue a prisoner who had gotten out of restraints - and the prisoner was restrained.

Deputy Purvis is a native of New Hanover County and has been employed with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office for 22 months.
