Authorities call daycare fire suspicious

CLAYTON

Firefighters were dispatched to a Clayton daycare about 3:50 a.m. Monday.

The building, which is under construction, is located in the 3100 block of Vinson Road. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the building fully engulfed and the roof had collapsed.

Authorities say the fire makes six times a building under construction has caught fire in recent months.

The daycare, a 14,000 sq. ft. building that was set to open soon, is located less than a mile from three houses that burned last month. And across the street from the daycare, a school bus at Powhata Elementary School was set on fire recently .

"You may have a neighbor you see at odd hours or a kid in the neighborhood, something out of the ordinary," Capt. Jon Gerrell of the Clayton Police Department explained. He says that's the kind of information they are hoping the public can provide.

The SBI is assisting with the investigation.

Anyone that may have seen any suspicious vehicles or persons in the area between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Monday (or have any information about the fire) is asked to call the Clayton Police Department at 919-553-4611 or Clayton Crime Stoppers at 919-359-TIPZ (8479).
