Woman accused of taking $90,000

PITTSBORO

Investigators say Ethel Chandler, 50, of 27 Richardson Road embezzled the money from Young's bank account after she was appointed power of attorney over Young's affairs.

Chandler faces four felony counts of embezzlement. She was released from the Chatham County Detention Center on $5,000 bond and ordered to appear in court in May.

Power of attorney privileges have been turned over to Young's son.

Attorney Wade Barber contacted ABC11 Tuesday to say he represents Chandler.

"Ethel Chandler is a fine lady," he said in a statement. "She provided tender love and extraordinary care to her beloved friend and cousin for many years. This unfortunate allegation includes monies spent for the expenses and care of Mrs. Young, wages to Mrs. Chandler for her services, and gifts given over the past three years."
