Chatham Courthouse traffic circle reopens in Pittsboro

PITTSBORO, NC

The circle, which is the intersection of Highways 64 and 15/501, has been closed since a huge fire gutted the historic courthouse late March 25.

"Workers have basically completed removal of surviving items and debris from the courthouse and have moved the protective fence back so that traffic can move around the entire circle," Chatham County Manager Charlie Horne said in a statement.

With the reopening of the circle, Chapel Hill Transit resumes its stop at the traffic circle for its Pittsboro Express (PX), effective at 4:30 pm Wednesday. For more information, visit http://chtransit.org or contact a customer service representative at (919) 969-4900.

Horne said the circle will remain open while a traffic circle on nearby Hwy 87 is finished. The county plans to repair or rebuild the courthouse, and Horne said that work might mean future closures.
