Pressley Parks, 26, of Spring Lake is charged with first-degree murder. Authorities say Smith was murdered and then a fire was set at his home to destroy evidence.
Smith's dog also was found dead in the home Thursday.
Parks is being held in Harnett County Dentention Center.
Authorities have not said what the motive was for the crime.
