Suspect in police chief shooting remains at large

DURHAM On April 29 around 2 p.m., police say two vehicles were firing shots at each other as the vehicles were going northbound on South Roxboro Street.

As one of the vehicles turned on to Dillard Street, an occupant of the vehicle fired a shot at an unmarked car driven by Police Chief Jose L. Lopez Sr. The shot struck and damaged the front windshield of the patrol car. Lopez was not injured.

The driver of one vehicle suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment.

Investigators are trying to locate Tony Anthony "Big Red" Person in connection with the incident. Person, 27, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

A second man, Lebron "Gutta" Brown, 21, was arrested May 11 on the same charges in Lynn, Massachusetts.

Lynn police officers stopped Brown on unrelated charges and arrested him after a foot chase.

Brown was charged in Lynn with disorderly conduct, breaking and entering, trespassing, possession of marijuana, cocaine and heroin and assault on a law enforcement officer.

He is being held in Massachusetts pending extradition to North Carolina.
