Passenger in Cary hit-and-run dies

CARY Police say shortly before 4 a.m., officers were called to a single vehicle crash at the intersection of SW Maynard Road and Tanglewood Drive.

Authorities say 19-year-old Daryl Torres was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero that was reported stolen by the Apex Police Department, when he lost control of the vehicle. The car overturned several times before coming to rest at the intersection.

Police found a passenger, 17-year-old Ja-Lyn Braen Hunt, ejected from the vehicle. Hunt was taken to WakeMed Raleigh with life-threatening injuries.

Hunt died from his injuries at the hospital Friday afternoon.

Torres fled the scene, but was arrested a short time later. He has been charged with felony hit-and-run and felony possession of a stolen vehicle. He also was charged with failure to appear on simple assault based on an outstanding warrant with the Durham Police Department.

In a search warrant to get Torres' blood to find out if he was drunk, police wrotee that when they found him he admitted to being the driver, admitted to drinking and smoking marijuana, but said he was wearing his seatbelt. Hunt apparently was unbelted. Cary police say their investigation is still underway.

Torres faced a judge for the first time in the case on Friday afternoon.

Authorities say they are considering upgrading charges against Torres, in light of Hunt's death. Even without additional charges, Torres is facing a large bail.

"Your bond's going to stay where it is at $250,000," Wake District Court Judge Jennifer Knox said.
