Man charged in fatal boat accident

PERSON COUNTY

Sgt. Bill Taylor of the NC Wildlife Resources told ABC11 Eyewitness News Tuesday that 33-year-old Robert Franklin Gentry of Roxboro surrendered to authorities Monday morning, about four hours after the accident.

According to Taylor, Gentry's boat rear-ended Tammy Duke's boat and went airborne, crashing through the passenger compartment of Duke's pontoon boat.

Duke's exact cause of death is not known. Authorities say she was in the lake about 10-15 minutes before being pulled out.

Her body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

Gentry took a breathalyzer test after he was in custody, but authorities have not released the results. He is charged with impaired boat operation, careless and reckless boat operation resulting in a death of a person and failure to render assistance and submit identification.

His court date is scheduled for July 27.
