Authorities say a 2005 Mazda driven by 18-year-old Allyn Hubbard Hunt II collided head-on with a 2005 Ford Focus driven by 63-year-old Bettie Hall Boring. According to a preliminary investigation, it appears that Hunt's vehicle crossed the center line.
Boring was pronounced dead at the scene. Hunt suffered minor injuries and a female passenger in his vehicle was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of leg injuries.
Police say alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the accident.
No charges have been filed at this time and the accident remains under investigation.
Highway 54 was scaled down to one lane near Hope Valley Road for more than three hours as officials cleared the scene.
