State Board of Education adopts new national standards

RALEIGH

The new education benchmarks would have students learn math and English-language arts concepts in the same grade no matter what state they live in.

The initiative has been pushed by the National Governors Association and state school superintendents to help make U.S. students better able to compete with students from other countries.

The Common Core Standards for English language arts and math are meant to help students hone their skills at thinking analytically.

Other states adopting the standards that were released Wednesday include Wisconsin.
