Woman killed, man injured in shooting

JOHNSTON COUNTY The call came in around 4 p.m. after 55-year-old Ben Croft, Jr. went to his neighbor's house to ask for help because he was shot.

"When deputies arrived, we found that the homeowner ... had been shot," Johnston County Chief Deputy Benjie Gaddis said.

Images from Chopper11 HD showed a shotgun on the back porch of the house.

Inside Croft's house, authorities found the body of 28-year-old Elizabeth Raynor Reyes.

Authorities say Croft and his stepdaughter were shot by her estranged husband, Adolfo Reyes.

"There was also a very, very small child in the house that was not injured," Gaddis said.

The boy, Adolfo and Elizabeth Reyes' son, was not hurt, but he was visibly shaken.

Croft was taken to WakeMed where he is in good condition.

Authorities say Adolfo Reyes also was injured, but have not said how. He is expected to be okay.

"The suspect was on the scene and taken into custody when the sheriff's deputies arrived," Gaddis said.

Family members say Elizabeth Reyes had separated from her husband earlier this year and was living with her mother and stepfather.

Neighbors say the family is well liked.

"How can something this terrible happen to somebody so nice," neighbor Linda Best said. "They're very good, hard working people."

Authorities have not said what charges will be filed in the case.
