Uncollected tax is more than budget shortfall

RALEIGH

The Charlotte Observer reported Monday the delinquencies mark a 67 percent jump from a year ago.

State Revenue Department spokeswoman Beth Stevenson says the agency hopes to recover $220 million by garnishing paychecks. She says officials have reached payment agreements for another $130 million.

Stevenson says about $110 million of the $840 million is simply uncollectable

Tax agency officials say the increase in unpaid taxes is due less to the bad economy than to better ways they have of identifying delinquents.
