The sample maps were presented to the Student Assignment Committee of the Board of Education at its meeting on Tuesday. They are beginning to look at the creation of zones where families would be assigned a seat in the schools in that zone.

The sample maps are accompanied with lists of schools in each zone and charts that compare projected 2012-13 student enrollment with the available school capacity in each zone of the appropriate map.

The school board's plan to move away from its socio-economic diversity policy has led to protests and arrests at recent school board meetings.

Opponents of the plan say it will lead to re-segregation of schools.

The school board will accept comments online through August 29.
