A woman traveling with her family from New Jersey to Florida was killed in Johnston County Tuesday night.

The NC Highway Patrol says the family pulled over to change a flat tire just south of Kenly. When the woman opened the vehicle door, the dog jumped out and ran across the interstate onto the median.

She went after the dog and as she crossed back over the interstate from the median, a vehicle hit her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
