According to Halifax Detective Doug Pilgreen, William Roland Massey III was arrested after a joint investigation between the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, the Halifax County District Attorney's Office and the North Carolina Forestry Service.
Pilgreen said the probe began when landowners reported trees cut and taken without their permission.
Massey, 52, is charged with two counts of forgery of deeds or wills, two counts of cutting, injuring or removing another's timber and one count of injury to trees crops or land of another.
He was placed in the Halifax County jail under a $40,000 bond.
