The spokesperson confirmed the hire to ABC11 Eyewitness News Friday.
Rick Evrard, an attorney, will advise the university on its NCAA investigation. Evrard currently works for a law firm in Kansas. His start date at UNC is not known.
Evrard worked for the NCAA for seven years and since leaving there, he has served as a consultant for various universities.
UNC is being investigated for possible violations involving current football players, former players and one assistant coach. According to the NCAA, some players may have had improper contact with sports agents and possibly received improper benefits.
During a news conference held on campus Thursday, UNC Director of Athletics Dick Baddour said the school is not aware of a timeline for the NCAA to conclude its investigation.
He also said he hopes the conclusion of the investigation will prompt tougher laws regarding agents and stiffer penalties for those who break NCAA compliance rules.
Despite Evrards' role as consultant, Leslie Strohm will remain UNC's lead legal counsel.
