Fayetteville police released the names Wednesday of the officer and suspect involved in a shooting that happened Monday night.

Officer David West is an 8-year veteran of the Fayetteville Police Department. He is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the SBI's investigation.

The suspect, 21-year-old Jamaal Demertrius Johnson, remains at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, but his condition is unknown.

Johnson is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnapping and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Officer West spotted Johnson driving a vehicle that was reported stolen, and when West attempted to make a traffic stop, Johnson fled. The two exchanged gunfire and the Johnson was wounded.

The shooting is the second since Sunday near the FSU campus. Campus officials say they will step up security as a result.
