Smithfield police say the driver of a motorcycle was killed Sunday after his bike collided head-on with a car.

The wreck happened on South Brightleaf Blvd. near Crestview Drive. Investigators say a car and a motorcycle collided head-on.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the driver of the motorcycle and his passenger thrown from the bike.

The driver 43-year-old Gary Wayne Greenwaldt of Four Oaks was pronounced dead at the hospital. His passenger, 35-year-old Rebecca Ann Tilley of Dudley, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The driver of the car, 49-year-old Keith McClain of Smithfield, refused medical treatment at the scene. Officers determined McClain was impaired and then administered a breathalyzer test.

Police charged McClain with driving while impaired and failure to reduce speed.

The case remains under investigation.
