The company says the caller pretends to be a representative of Progress Energy and then asks customers for credit card information to avoid having their service disconnected.
In one of those cases, the customer's credit card information was used to make purchases.
Progress Energy says it's rare for any of its employees to contact customers for that kind of information. If you have concerns about a call you have received, call the company immediately at (800) 452-2777.
