SOUTHERN PINES --Rescue crews say a small plane crashed in Moore County around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, the pilot was seriously injured. Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue crews say it appears a home-built single engine plane, crashed into a wooded area near the Pinelawn Cemetery in Southern Pines. It happened around 2:45pm on Sunday on Old Morganton Road.
Eyewitness said it sounded like the plane was having engine trouble before it spiraled into the woods. It is not known at this time the exact cause of the crash, but the pilot is reported to have suffered serious injuries.
Rescue crews say the pilot was flown to UNC Hospital on the TarHeel with multiple injuries. His condition is not known but crews say he appeared to be alert and was talking.
Authorities have secured the scene of the crash, and are waiting to begin an investigation into what happened.
