According to court records, Colonel Douglas Denn was arrested by Newport police in Carteret County around 11 p.m. Monday night.
He was charged with driving while impaired, speeding, and possession of an open container/consumption of alcohol in passenger area after his blood alcohol content was found to be .14 percent. The legal limit in North Carolina is .08.
Denn became the Cherry Point base commander in August, 2009.
He is due in court in December.
