Cherry Point commander relieved of command

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.

That after Colonel Douglas Denn was arrested by Newport police in Carteret County around 11 p.m. Monday night on a drunk driving charge.

The Marines cited "loss of confidence in Denn's ability to command" as the reason for him being relieved of his post.

Denn is charged with driving while impaired, speeding, and possession of an open container/consumption of alcohol in passenger area after his blood alcohol content was found to be .14 percent. The legal limit in North Carolina is .08.

Denn became the Cherry Point base commander in August, 2009.

He is due in court in December.

Col Robert D. Clinton, executive officer, MCAS Cherry Point, has assumed command.
