ABC11 Eyewitness News, along with other media outlets, is suing the University of North Carolina in an attempt to get records in the NCAA football investigation.Since the probe started, several news organizations have been denied access to documents believed to be public under North Carolina law.

Among the records requested are phone records of Butch Davis, John Blake and Dick Baddour, records involving tutors and any documentation of interaction between agents, players and boosters.

Top university officials say many of the records being sought are private.

In a statement released late Thursday afternoon, UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp said he recognizes the media's interest in the football story. But he added federal and state laws prevent him from releasing such information.

The NCAA has been looking into allegations since this past summer about the relationship between former assistant coach John Blake and a pro agent, the relationship between some players and agents, and charges of academic misconduct involving players and a tutor accused of helping them write papers.
