Wreck, SUV fire close down I-40

A wreck and a vehicle fire closed both the east and westbound lanes of I-40 Friday evening. It started just before 5 p.m. when a car and truck collided on the eastbound side of I-40 near Aviation Pkwy at mile marker 285. Several lanes were closed as authorities tried to clear the scene.

Authorities say there were injures in the accident, but the extent of them are unclear.

During the incident, a SUV began to burst into flames on the westbound side of I-40. It is unclear what caused the blaze.

It took fire crews several minutes to get to the scene, due to traffic back ups.

The SUV was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.

All lanes of I-40 had to be shut down as authorities worked to contain the area.

By 5:30 p.m. crews had the fire under control, just as the eastbound lanes began to slowly reopen.

No one was injured in the westbound SUV fire.

By 6 p.m. one lane on each side of the interstate were reopened despite the lanes being covered with foam from crews extinguishing the fire.
