Headed west this weekend? Better plan for slow going on Interstate 40/85.

The Department of Transportation warns motorists that the grand opening of the new Tanger outlet center in Mebane will likely lead to some traffic headaches.

The center - at Exit 154 - opens at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Drivers who want to avoid this congestion can use the following alternate routes:

  • Exit 153 (N.C. 119) to Mebane Oaks Road
  • Exit 157 ( Buckhorn Road).

Police Department personnel will be managing major intersections in the vicinity to monitor and adjust the traffic signals as needed.

The new retail center is expected to bring more than 800 jobs to the area along with more than 80 stores including Saks Off Fifth, Banana Republic, Gap and Nike.
