Fort Bragg soldier pleads guilty to rape

FORT BRAGG

He entered the plea in military court. He also faces more than two dozen civilian charges related to attacks on six women in Fayetteville and Hoke County.

Prosecutors said the military rape charge stemmed from an attack on a military wife in her home at Fort Bragg in December, 2009. The victim said the midnight intruder covered her mouth with his hand, threatened to kill her, then raped her in front of her 6-year-old.

Pernell pleaded guilty to rape, aggravated sexual contact, assault consummated by battery, burglary and attempted aggravated sexual contact.

He pleaded not guilty to another burglary charge and to a charge of housebreaking. His trial on those charges continued Wednesday.
