It happened Monday night at 515 Edgecombe Street in Rocky Mount.
Investigators say the men entered the home of 42-year-old Joseph Jerome Maxwell brandishing handguns and demanded he give them money.
They then shot Maxwell in the head and body, before leaving with cash and other property.
Maxwell was transported to Nash General Hospital and was then flown to Pitt Memorial Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
Detectives say the men were wearing masks, gloves, and dark clothing. They left on foot.
