Authorities stormed a room at a Days Inn on Highway 701 in Clinton Tuesday afternoon and arrested Todd Louis Lanford, 36. He is charged with abuse and attempting to sever a child’s genitalia.
Deputies say Lanford walked out of a plea bargain proceeding in a Cumberland County courtroom Monday and did not return despite a judge's order to appear. He was already out of jail on a $35,000 bond.
Lanford was charged in 2008 after investigators said he threatened, beat, and attempted to cut the penis off of an 11-year old boy. The boy suffered bruises all over his body and was cut along the pelvic area.
At the time of the charges, Lanford was the live-in boyfriend of the boy’s mother, who was charged with aiding and abetting a felony and accessory after the fact.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Lanford was facing up to 90 years in prison, but a plea bargain agreement would have reduced his sentence to 20 years of imprisonment.
He now also faces a failure to appear charge.
