John Sidney Daniels, 28, told investigators that his .32-caliber pistol was on the edge of the counter when his dog jumped up and knocked it to the floor.
Daniels said he tried to jump out of the way, but the gun went off - hitting him in the knee.
A relative took him to the hospital and deputies were called to investigate.
The warrant says deputies found the gun and ammunition in Daniels' home.
