It happened in the 1900 block of Old Raleigh Road Wednesday afternoon.
Pictures from Chopper 11 HD showed a pickup truck with heavy damage.
The driver of the vehicle, 45-year-old Marc Allen Whyte of Apex, died.
Police say it does not appear that alcohol was a factor.
