Authorities arrested 24-year-old Malissa Yates of Fayetteville Monday afternoon. She is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond on charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
Investigators say Yates assaulted her 1-year-old son in July 2010. According to a report from the state medical examiner's office, the child died of blunt force trauma to the head, chest and abdomen.
Yates will make a first court appearance on Tuesday.
