Crews work to repair water main break

12-inch main bursts sending water flooding down Roxboro and Main Streets in Durham

Several blocks of Roxboro Street and Main Street in downtown Durham were shut down Saturday, after a 12-inch water main burst.Water gushing from the main made Roxboro Street noticably swell from pressure under the surface.

The sight and sound shocked those who were in the area.

"When I came it was just a mild build-up," said Margaret Raeford, an eyewitness. "Now, just to see all this, it's just amazing."

It was also inconvenient for local business owners like Roberto Copa Matos, owner of the Old Havana Sandwich Shop. It's located down the street from the break, which blocked his normal commute to work. He had to drive around detours to get there.

"I asked [police] about the situation." Matos said. "They said there was a problem, the water is spilling, and they don't really know what's gonig on, and they expect it to be fixed as soon as possible."

But that could still be a while, since the water main and street surface fixes won't be simple.

There is not currently a time estimate on repairs.
